Belugas are the only whales that can turn their heads. They look at you the way a curious dog looks at you — directly, without pretense, wondering what you are.

Four beluga whales move through this lamp in exactly that way. One glides near the surface, three more rest and drift at the reef floor among green anemone, red coral, and sea grass. A clownfish moves between them, bright red and white against the white of the belugas. The cave ceiling runs across the top of the scene — dark rock lined with glowing green algae, moss that only grows where light barely reaches. The resin frame is dark at the edges, almost black, so the interior ocean glows brighter by contrast. When the light comes on from below, the white of the belugas catches it first.

Belugas are called canaries of the sea because they sing — clicks, chirps, whistles that carry through Arctic water for miles. This lamp holds four of them in a cave where that sound would echo off every wall.

Each lamp is made by hand in Hanoi, Vietnam. The four beluga figures, clownfish, anemone, and coral are positioned inside the resin at different depths before the layers are poured around them. The dark outer edge of the frame is part of the resin structure, contrasting with the lit interior to make the ocean inside appear to glow from within. Because every piece is handmade, the exact placement of each beluga, the color of the reef, and the shape of the cave ceiling are never identical. What arrives is the only one built exactly this way.
