Manatees move through the ocean the way good thoughts move through a quiet mind — slowly, without urgency, taking up exactly the space they need.

Three manatees drift through a rocky underwater cave, the stone walls on both sides lit in blue from within, sea grass and coral growing at the base in green and cobalt. The cave narrows in the middle where the rock formation runs through the scene — the manatees navigate around it the way they navigate everything: calmly, without changing speed. A point of light glows from the right wall where the rock catches the LED. The whole scene is enclosed in a diamond-cut resin form that throws blue light outward onto whatever surface it sits on.

There are very few animals on earth that have no natural predators and no apparent anxiety about it. Manatees are one of them. This lamp puts three of them in a cave that belongs entirely to them, lit the color of water at midnight.

Each lamp is made by hand in Hanoi, Vietnam. The three manatee figures are positioned at different depths inside the diamond-form resin — navigating the rock formation that runs through the center — before the layers are poured around them. The coral and sea grass are detailed at the base. The rock walls on both sides are formed from the natural resin structure, textured and irregular. Because every piece is handmade, the exact placement of each manatee, the texture of the cave walls, and the light scatter from the cut edges are never identical. What arrives is the only one built exactly this way.
