Three manta rays in the same water column. Two divers who came a long way to be here.

The scene runs from top to bottom through a cave formed entirely by natural wood — burl grain on both sides, rock formations breaking through the wood at the edges, the whole interior glowing teal from below. Two divers move through the upper water, one above the other, both facing the same direction. A manta ray crosses the middle of the scene, spotted wings spread wide. Below it, two more mantas move toward the base — deeper, darker, the bottom one barely visible against the floor where the light is still reaching but barely.

This is what it looks like to be inside a manta ray cleaning station — a specific place in the ocean where mantas return again and again to have parasites removed by smaller fish. They line up. They wait. They move through in sequence, unhurried, knowing they will return. The divers know this too. They came here because they knew the mantas would be here.

Each lamp is made by hand in Hanoi, Vietnam. The three manta rays and two divers are positioned inside the gem-cut resin form at different depths before the layers are poured around them — the mantas arranged vertically so the depth between the shallowest and deepest is real, not just visual. The natural wood forms the frame on all sides, chosen for its burl grain, shaped so the jagged inner edge where wood meets water is raw and natural. Because every piece is handmade, the exact placement of each manta, the wood grain pattern, and the teal of the water are never identical. What arrives is the only one built exactly this way.
